| The Desmoulin Snail, which almost halted work on the Newbury Bypass, and gave its name to a well known local art gallery, has become extinct on its newly relocated site.
Buglife, The Invertebrate Conservation Trust said that the snail could no longer be found at the special translocation site, which is rumoured to have added £250,000 to the cost of the bypass. The Desmoulin demise is blamed on poor maintenance of it’s new location.
Apparently the pipes that fed water to the site silted up and the area dried out causing the snail to become extinct. |
