| The third annual Newbury Comedy Festival kicked off on Saturday 8 July. The first day was packed with events. Opening the festival was James Campbell’s Comedy 4 Kids, Dot Comedy’s Record Graveyard, top female stand-up Natalie Haynes, the wonderful Will Smith and a sell-out performance from TV’s Jimmy Carr.
Sunday proved another successful day as Tim FitzHigham and Duncan Walsh Atkins starred in At The Drop of A Hippopotamus – An Afternoon of Flanders & Swann at The Donnington Valley Hotel which also sold out. At The Corn Exchange, The Muppet Movie, Airplane! and When Harry Met Sally were shown and roaming around Northbrook Street was Dot Comedy’s Sportsdesk.
On Monday, the first ever Wisecrackers champion was crowned. Christian Robertson from Highdown School in Caversham, Reading took the coveted title in the comedy competition for young people in a close-knit final between wannabe comedians from Newbury and Reading.
“This year’s festival is even bigger and better than last year’s” said Tony Trigwell-Jones, Newbury Comedy Festival’s Marketing Manager “we’ve already out-sold last year and we still have six days to go”.
The Festival has been well received in the press with coverage in all the national titles over the weekend including 4 out of 5 of The Guardian’s Top 5 comedy events this week.
This is the first year that the Festival Pass has been introduced and it has proved a success. Customers have been using Passes to see as much as possible while taking advantage of generous discounts all over Newbury.
The Routemaster Bar also opened at The Courtyard at the back of The Corn Exchange. Entry is free to all Comedy Festival Ticket Holders. Festival Pass owners also have access to the VIP lounge on the top deck.
