| As predicted by Newbury.net, Wharf Street has now been reopened. All road closure signs have been removed and traffic is flowing normally once again.
This follows a week of absolute chaos with traffic congestion causing horrendous problems for buses, commuters and shoppers.
The reopening of the road was confirmed this morning (Monday) as Thames Valley Police and Newbury Buses issued an ultimatum to West Berkshire Council to “get it sorted”. Keith Williams for West Berkshire Council, who is clerk of works for the project, returned from holiday this morning and was horrified by what he found. He gave immediate instructions to reopen the road.
Work has also started on replacing the cobbles in Bridge Street and Bartholomew Street north to enable buses to use Northbrook Street northbound from Monday 24th July.
Park Way Bridge will then revert to single way traffic for southbound traffic. Taxis will not be allowed to use Northbrook Street during the hours of pedestrianisation.
Unconfirmed reports from within the Market Street offices of West Berkshire Council indicate that Nick Carter (Chief Executive) and Peter Atkinson (Chairman of the Town Centre Steering Group) are furious with this decision, because it effectively scuppers their plans to pedestrianise the Market Place. |
