Newbury Market update
21st June 2006 9.4am

Newbury Town Council can now confirm that the Thursday and Saturday Newbury markets will be temporarily relocated to Northbrook Street from Thursday 29 June 2006, until a date yet to be defined in the New Year.

This temporary move is to allow the refurbishment of the Market Place. In addition, the Town Council is pleased to announce a contribution of £10,000 to the market place refurbishment project to ensure state of the art provision of electrical supplies in the new market place, both for the market and the many additional public events we expect to be held in the new space created.

Steve Brind, one of the market managers said “A lot of work has gone into planning the move to Northbrook Street. We have to ensure that setting up and taking down can be carried out safely, that all stalls have appropriate electrical supplies and that we cater for different layouts for the different stall holders on a Thursday and Saturday. We are looking forward to seeing all our existing customers in the temporary location and hope for lots of new ones too”.

Northbrook Street Traders and the Newbury Retail Association, with the support of West Berkshire Council are planning a celebration event on Saturday 8 July, both to celebrate the completion of the first phase of the Northbrook Street refurbishment and to welcome the market into the street. Emma Webster, West Berkshire Council’s Executive Member for the Newbury Vision said “Following the success of the Bartholomew Street refurbishment and the street parties held there, we are glad to support a similar initiative by the Northbrook Street traders, as we expect the same success there”.

The Chairman of the Town Council’s Community Services Committee, Cllr Peter Greenhalgh said “The Town Council looks forward to as many people as possible visiting the refurbished Northbrook Street and the relocated market. Newbury is a market town and we are pleased to be able to celebrate that. We are also pleased to contribute to the Market Place refurbishment. The resulting open space created will be a credit to the town and I am sure the centrepiece for many exciting events in the future”.
