| Crime in Newbury town centre has fallen 13% from normal levels, according to police figures obtained by this website.
The town centre patrol led by Inspector Malcolm Whitaker only has to solve a third of reported crime each year, but so far, more than half of town incidents have been solved, from shoplifting and vandalism to burglary.
The move is in contrast to West Berkshire, where crime has gone up overall, but for March, Newbury had 13 reported shoplifting incidents, 7 public order allegations, and three assaults reported. But 12 people also reported having their purse or bag snatched while out shopping, which is of continuing concern for officers. |
