| Liberal democrat councillors, led by councillor Tony Vickers (Northcroft Ward) are suggesting that a large area of Victoria Park should be utilised to provide additional parking facilities during the construction of the Park Way project.
There will be an acute shortage of parking facilities in the town during the construction of Newbury’s showpiece shopping centre. There will not be one single public parking space on the eastern side of Northbrook Street for nearly 3 years. Shoppers, shop workers and residents of Park Terrace will be expected to park in the multi storey car park in Northcroft Place (behind W H Smith).
The plan to convert Victoria Park for temporary parking is expected to arouse considerable opposition. The park is regarded as “Newbury’s green lung” and as such is considered to be sacrosanct.
Even if the plan is approved, shoppers will still have to cross a building site to get to Northbrook Street. Graham Hunt, Chief Executive at Newbury Town Council said earlier today that they had received no official approach from West Berkshire Council or Shearer Properties. |
