Luminous cows for Greenham Common
01st April 2006 08.28am

Following a recent spate of night time accidents between cattle and cars using Bury’s Bank Road, local farmers have had to take drastic measures to improve safety for their animals. A special dye has been developed in conjunction with the Road Research Laboratory at Crowthorne, and the Institute of Animal Research at Compton.

All cows are being sprayed with this special dye in an experiment which starts today (April 1st). Now as soon as the cows are picked out by the cars headlights, they “glow in the dark” as indicated in our picture.

There is one major drawback in that the dye retains it’s luminosity for anything up to one hour after being picked out by the cars headlights. Police are worried that as the cows continue grazing and move further on to the common, that they will receive reports of ghostly apparitions.

The experiment is being watched very closely by farmers across the UK. In particular, a team from the New Forest will be spending several nights on the common, with a view to spraying all of their New Forest Ponies.
