13th March 2006 7.38am

Former Vodafone Chief executive Sir Christopher Gent has given up his post as life president of the group. He has quit amidst rumours of a boardroom rift.

Last month, Vodafone revealed that its assets were overvalued by as much as £28bn. There were also suggestions that the company was about to sell its struggling Japanese phone business.

Shares in Vodafone fell to a three-year low in February. There have been other high level departures in recent weeks including Peter Bamford, the chief marketing officer, Ken Hydon the finance director and deputy chief executive Julian Horn-Smith.
