Racing abandoned at the last minute
12th February 2006 19.49pm

There were a lot of unhappy trainers and punters at Newbury Racecourse yesterday afternoon (Saturday). Racing was abandoned at the last minute in spite of rapidly improving conditions.

The course was examined at 7.00am and then at 11.00am and again at midday. The Clerk of the Course Richard Osgood and managing director Mark Kershaw wanted to delay racing by 30 minutes to take advantage of rapidly improving conditions.

The decision to abandon was taken by stewards, after hearing the opinions of the Jockey Club, three trainers, three jockeys, and a vet.

Newbury was basking in winter sunshine yesterday afternoon which would have made for a superb days racing.
