Raceday gridlock predicted
11th February 2006 8.6am

Gridlock is expected in Newbury today as thousands of racegoers head for Newbury Racecourse. The A339 will have to cope with the racegoers and the diverted traffic from Newbury town centre.

The racecourse was inspected at 7.30am this morning and a further inspection of the course will be made at 11.00am. This will be too late to prevent thousands of motorists descending on Newbury in anticipation of a days racing.

The A339 is the only route across the Kennet and Avon canal for the central and western areas of Newbury. Road closures have caused misery for commuters all week. The Saturday shoppers for the town centre, and those heading for the retail park at Pinchington Lane are expected to be seriously inconvenienced this morning.

Gates open at the racecourse at 11.30am

First race: 1.35pm

Last race: 4.45pm
