Golf bonanza hangs on footpath debate
08th December 2005 08.09am

Tory-run West Berkshire Council is to thwart plans to turn the Donnington Grove Golf Course into a showcase for the world’s top golfers.

Club managers have been seeking to divert two footpaths running next to the fairways, after insurers feared being sued by walkers being hit by flying balls.

But after intense lobbying by a small band of dogwalkers, councillors and neighbours, Executive Councillor for countryside Geoff Findlay has been advised to keep the paths in place, effectively killing off hopes of the £30m English Open Golf tournament coming to town.

The paths date from 1993 when a former fish farm and private land was converted into the Parasampia golf club. But safety consultants are now advising the club that new technology means golfers can hit balls harder and further, increasing the risk to walkers.

The council asked the club to redesign various holes, put up signs, and install high netting at dangerpoints around the course, and advised the club to apply for temporary footpath closures during the tournament.

Meanwhile, the council has received a 600-strong petition against the proposals, along with 100 letters of complaint. But another 50 local people are in support of the scheme.

Cllr Findlay is expected to reject any footpath relocation this evening (Thursday), leaving the club with the options of appealing, installing the safety measures, or deciding if the club can be viable without the big tournament.
