| Newbury's historic Market Place will get its publicly-approved upgrade next year.
The go-ahead was given by West Berkshire Council's ruling Executive last week, following a public consultation that showed three quarters of respondents in favour of the scheme believing it would enhance the character of Newbury and make it a more attractive place to spend time in.
The Council has also decided that, subject to a satisfactory safety audit, the market can re-locate to Northbrook Street while construction is under way, and that a decision on whether Wharf Street should be closed to traffic as part of the scheme will be deferred until the impact of closure during the construction period has been evaluated.
Final details of the scheme will be agreed by the Newbury Town Centre Task Group, with the work being carried out next summer.
The upgrade will consolidate the role of Market Place as a traditional focus for the town, opening up the space to enable activities from surrounding shops, an improved market environment, and opportunities for public events.
Following last week's decision, Councillor Emma Webster said: "I believe the project will bring social and commercial advantages that will further enhance this emerging cultural quarter of the town." |
