| As if we needed reminding that Christmas is not too far away, the big tree in the Market Place was erected this morning. Supplied by Yattendon Estates, the tree stands just under 35ft tall and will soon be adorned with coloured lights for the big “switch on” on the 18th of November. (Our picture shows the tree shortly after it was erected. The branches are still tied back)
As always the switching on of the Christmas Lights is a popular event, and draws large crowds to the Market Place. There will be a procession which will include the Mayor councillor Val Bull, accompanied by Father Christmas, live reindeer and St Nicholas Church Choir. Youngsters from Speenhamland Primary School will also take part in the procession and escort Santa’s carriage.
Kick FM will be on stage to co-ordinate proceedings along with a tribute band Aged Quo. The St Nicolas Church Choir will sing carols accompanied by the Salvation Army Band.
There will be children’s rides, candy floss, sweets, chestnuts, mulled wine, mince pies, panto characters, reindeer, hot and cold refreshments, community stalls etc.
There will also be a fun fair in the Wharf in the library car park.
At 6.00pm, there will be a spectacular firework display in Victoria Park.
The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust tea shop will be offering a welcoming open fire and mince pies.
Because the event is always well attended, there is an opportunity for any local organisation or individual to have a stall in the Market Place to either sell Christmas goods or simply to generate funds for their cause in any other way. The invitation is cost free. For further details, please contact Mitch Roberts, the Town Centre Manager on 01635 37631 or mobile 07931 712969 or e-mail tcm@newbury.net. |
