Thousands of new jobs for West Berkshire
20th October 2005 23.01pm

More than 2,000 new jobs are to be created at the nuclear weapons factory in Aldermaston after the Government announced a £1bn funding increase.

AWE Aldermaston heard the good news last week from the Ministry of Defence, and will hire 1,000 new scientists. Another 1,200 construction jobs will be created to replace the 1950s buildings over the next three years.

The news comes after newbury.net revealed likely job losses at West Berkshire’s biggest employer, Vodafone, which is cutting back on call centre staff working in Bartholomew Street.

Two years ago, the AWE management of Lockheed Martin and BNFL was given a 25-year contract to run the Aldermaston site.
