| Police are investigating whether to install CCTV at the southern end of Bartholomew Street after complaints from traders. With just six weeks to go until late night drinking takes hold in the town, retailers such as Gerry Hogan of Hogan’s Music have asked for more cover, and for better street cleaning to solve the army of rats feasting off the leftover kebabs and pizzas.
Councillor Roger Hunneman told the last meeting of the Newbury Retail Association that the CCTV scheme was under review, and it’s understood that the council has amassed funds for another camera on the St John’s Roundabout and possibly one for the south end of Bartholomew Street.
However, last year the police turned down the chance of extra coverage when it lobbied for the Phoenix Brewery nightclub plan to be turned down. The man behind the scheme had offered £16,000 towards a new system, but was still rejected. |
