| For ten years, Newbury Shopmobility has provided electric scooters and wheelchairs to people who have temporary or permanent mobility difficulty. Located in the Pembroke Road Multi Storey Car park behind WH Smiths on Northbrook Street, Shopmobility is operated by Volunteer Centre West Berkshire and receives significant financial support from both West Berkshire Council and others including The Vodafone UK Foundation.
Thanks to funding from Vodafone they are now able to open on Mondays, extending the service to six full days per week. Last year alone the service loaned out 8000 wheelchairs and scooters and it is hoped that the new Monday opening will increase this figure by 700-800 a year.
Garry Poulson, Director of Volunteer Centre West Berkshire says "It's great working with Vodafone. This kind of social investment has two distinct benefits. Firstly, the added opportunity for access to the town for our less mobile residents and, secondly, the economic effect on retail trade." |
