| Pegging out the plots for this year’s Newbury Show has begun, using almost six miles of rope and tape, and hundreds of wooden pegs. Each year, Peter Warren-Tibbetts and John Bulpit stake their claim to the job of sorting out who goes where for the pinnacle of Newbury’s social calendar.
“We’ve become experts at pegging out,” John Bulpit explained. “It takes weeks because we all do it as volunteers, and many of us in between full time jobs. Luckily we’ve had decent weather to start us off, but it’s not always like this!”
The Royal County of Berkshire Show is unusual for the high number of volunteers which help make it such a success – more than 400 help out each year. All have one thing in common – their enthusiasm for raising awareness of agriculture and the rural way of living. |
