Your guide to round-the-clock drinking
01st September 2005 23.38pm

How to booze until dawn in Newbury

Newbury pubgoers will soon be able to drink for up to 18 hours a day – and longer at Bank Holiday weekends, newbury.net can reveal.

Research by the newbury.net team found several bars and pubs planning to open until 3am at weekends, while the town’s three nightclubs will all stay open until 4am.

Although most landlords have added an hour on so they can serve alcohol until midnight, others pubs will start pulling pints at 10 in the morning. Although the Government liberalized the pub laws to stagger chucking-out times, in Newbury most drinkers will simply be leaving an hour later.

Neighbours have until tomorrow to raise objections to the new closing times, but only seven town landlords have had to face council hearings, and most pubs are on course to get their new licence rubber-stamped without further ado.

Interestingly, the tapas bar in Bartholomew Street will open until 3am, while the Hatchet in the Market Place has asked for drinking-up times to be removed. Many town centre pubs have asked for drinking-up times to be extended from the present 20 minutes to an hour – fuelling fears that drinkers will simply line up more drinks at last orders.
