Benyon battles for AFC Newbury
18th July 2005 9.57am

Newbury MP, Richard Benyon, has been working hard to help save AFC Newbury following the seizure of club assets by bailiffs last week.

Following the reports of the actions of bailiffs acting on instructions of HM Customs and Excise, Richard Benyon

  • Visited the Club and spoke at length with Club Chairman, Steve Hartley.
  • Visited Vodafone and spoke with senior Vodafone UK personnel urging them to continue with their support for the Club.
  • Liaised with the Club on the circumstances of its financial position.
  • Is putting together a complaint to HM Customs and Excise for their unwarranted actions which have brought the club to the brink of insolvency and have limited it’s ability to trade its way back to a healthy financial state.

Richard said, “ I am totally committed to the survival and future success of this Club. I pay tribute to all the staff, committee, players and supporters who have stuck by the Club at this difficult time. They deserve the future success that I know the Club can achieve”
