| Up to 50,000 race-goers are expected in Newbury next weekend to see the King George VI Stakes, prompting West Berkshire Council to put in a one-way traffic system at Stroud Green.
Newbury landed the extra event while Ascot undergoes a £185m refurbishment, but with thousands of turf fans driving in, the council is preparing to turn Racecourse Road and the bottom of Greenham Road one-way so cars can use both lanes to prevent gridlock on the A339.
The move also means residents in some surrounding roads will be banned from parking or waiting outside their homes, between 9am-1pm next Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Residents of New Road and the Racecourse estate will have to use Westwood Road to get on to Pyle Hill.
The £15 a head meet is regarded as the European championships of middle distance racing. The 50,000 crowd will be spread over the three days. |
