Newbury town centre to be dug up again
11th July 2005 10.53am

Newbury’s Town Bridge and Bartholomew Street are to be dug up so workmen can lay new gas pipes, just months after a £660,000 revamp, newbury.net can reveal.

Road users have been told to use the A339 for three weeks in September so Transco can lay a new pipe between Boots in Northbrook Street, over the bridge, and along the repaved Bartholomew Street.

West Berkshire Council is planning to close the road to all traffic between 8.30am and 4.30pm, between September 12 and October 7, piling extra rush hour pressure on Bear Lane, the A339 and Cheap Street.

Recent roadworks by water, electric and gas contractors has seen the paved areas replaced by tarmac, although the council has powers to force workmen to leave the street as they found it.
