| Newbury to mark the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II with a combined Veterans and Freedom Parade on Sunday 17 July 2005, commencing at 3.30 pm
Newbury Town Council, in conjunction with the Royal Engineers, 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) and the Newbury Branch of the Royal British Legion will be commemorating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II with a parade from Pelican Lane, along Northbrook Street followed by a Drumhead Service in the Market Place. The parade starts at 3:30pm at Pelican Lane and will arrive in the Market Place around 3:45pm. The parade will return, marching by the same route, at around 5:00pm.
The Royal Engineers received Freedom of Newbury in 1997 and will be exercising their right to march through the town with drums beating, flags flying and bayonets fixed. There will also be a parade of Veterans, all led by the Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers. This will be a moving and spectacular sight, and everyone is welcome to come along to show their support and appreciation!
The Royal Engineers will be represented by the 42 Engineer Regiment (Geographic) who are based at Hermitage and have served the town in many ways, including providing a Guard of Honour at the War Memorial for our Remembrance Sunday Act of Remembrance.
The parade will arrive in the Market Place where an inspection will take place, followed by a Drumhead Service.
Veterans of the Second World War are being traced by the Royal British Legion, Newbury Branch. Any War Veteran who has not been contacted and would like to take part, please contact the Secretary of Newbury Royal British Legion on 01635 47415. For those Veterans unable to march, arrangements are being made to ensure their participation. |
