Parade to remember Japanese war
15th June 2005 08.20am

War veterans are being asked to dust down their medals and memorabilia for an exhibition in Newbury to mark VJ Day next month.

The Royal Berkshire Regiment, now amalgamated with the Wiltshire and Gloucestershire, is organizing the exhibition to find out more about local contributions and experiences against the brutal Japanese military in India, Burma and the Pacific.

The exhibition will run from August 12 to August 15, when a special veterans parade is planned through Newbury.

West Berkshire Council chairman John Chapman said: " I am looking to make contact with anyone who was actively engaged in the Pacific theatre in 1945, whether in the Army, Navy or Air Force or as an internee or prisoner of war. Ideally, they would be soldiers who had active service in India, Burma or in the Pacific before VJ Day in 1945 and resident in West Berkshire. We would particularly welcome some of our Allies – Americans, Australians, Dutch or Indian etc."
