Newbury website causes a stir
29th April 2005 8.1am

West Berkshire Council officials are investigating whether local Liberal Democrats have used taxpayers’ money to promote party politics.

Conservatives have complained about the website

http://www.westberkslibdems.org.uk/ which is published from the council offices in Market Street.

Opposition leader Graham Jones said: “I believe in fair play, especially at elections. I do hope the Lib Dems aren’t using public funds to host such a partisan website.”

The latest twist comes a week after Lib Dems complained to Conservative Central Office about a photograph of Newbury candidate Richard Benyon outside the former department store Beynon. The letters had been rearranged to spell Mr Benyon’s name, sparking outrage in the Lib Dem camp.
