| Rocking Corn Exchange
Easter should find blues fans rocking in the aisles for the Blues Brothers visit to the Corn Exchange on Saturday. The hit stage show features hits such as Mustang Sally, Jailhouse Rock and Soul Man, and show organisers will be removing the seating so the 400-capacity theatre can groove with the duo, and their seven-piece backing band.
Pub ghost back
TV ghostbuster Derek Acorah may have his work cut out at the Gun pub in Wash Common, as the spirits refuse to stay in the optics. Pub regulars all have their own stories about the pub’s resident ghost, but the other day the landlord got a fright when a bread board flew off the kitchen work surface, and crashed to the floor some distance away.
Pub revamp
An 18th coaching inn on the edge of Newbury is to be turned into a gastropub. Greene King brewery wants to turn the White Horse in Hermitage into a fine food venue, and has asked for planning permission for a major refit, and 20-space car park. The pub in Love Lane is still a favourite watering hole for coachmen on their way to show off their skills at Newbury Show.
Sign of the times
Town planners are weighing up whether to force Gordon’s Bar to remove their signage. Owners of the hit bar-restaurant didn’t get the required planning permission during their £2m refit of the old Beatties toyshop in Cheap Street. They have now applied, but if West Berkshire Council says no, the signs will have to come down. |
