| Top brass reshuffle
Reading’s police chief has been handed control of the new supersector comprising West Berkshire, Reading and Wokingham.
Chief Supt Dave Murray was appointed just before Christmas, after a Thames Valley reorganization was ordered by Chief Constable Peter Neyroud.
The new sector stretches from Hungerford to Twyford, and has been split into three sub-sections. West Berkshire remains under supervision of 38-year-old ex-marine Supt Jim Trotman.
Racecourse accolade
Newbury Racecourse renames its Members Enclosure the Premier Enclosure from Monday, after being named Racecourse of the Year. Newbury fought off strong competition from Cheltenham and Haydock to scoop the accolade, and Chief Executive Mark Kershaw said: “We have a strong team at Newbury and have invested heavily in a customer care programme designed to ensure all our visitors enjoy the best day's racing possible. This award shows our efforts have been recognised and we are extremely proud to hold the title."
Pubs ready for 2005
Pubs and clubs in Newbury are preparing for thousands to flock into town to see in 2005. The Narrowboat in London Road has brought in DJs to play records from 2004, while the Lion in West Street has organized a Mods and Rockers fancy dress party, with both venues charging £20 a head.
