| Council highways engineers are meeting this week to decide on a range of measures to ease the gridlock caused by Newbury’s latest set of traffic lights.
The Pound Street junction has caused a headache for workers, shoppers and visitors to the town, with rush hour queues stretching right through town to Park Way.
In papers obtained by Newbury.net, West Berkshire Council acknowledged that the junction enhancement was to give preference to cyclists, but it emerged that the council had backed down from banning cars turning left over Blackboys bridge into Station Road, as the route forms part of the school run to St Nicolas school.
The logjam arose from pedestrians pressing the buttons for the crossing, and from shoppers and workers struggling to park in Bartholomew Street, where loading bays have replaced parking spaces in some areas.
Traffic wardens are to be told to increase patrols to stop people parking in Station Road, and to fix the sensors, so the lights don’t change to red unless someone is crossing.
The junction lights were installed as part of the Vision for Newbury. |
