How to beat the conmen
17th November 2004 20.16pm

AROUND 250 people are expected to learn more about the lasting effects on elderly folk who have let conmen into their homes.

All over 60s in Newbury are invited to Park House School on December 11 to find out more about how bogus callers operate, how to deal with them, and what help is available for victims of crime.

Police Crime reduction advisor Ruth Hemingway said: “Distraction burglary is an appalling crime in which offenders with no conscience target the elderly and give them any story in order to get into their home and steal their belongings.”

“These offenders prey on the trusting nature of ordinary decent people and combating this type of crime is the top priority of this police area. There are just a few simple steps that people can take to protect themselves and I have organised this event in order to help as many people as possible.”

The seminar will provide an opportunity to introduce some of the organisations that can assist older people with a range of issues. Speakers from Help the Aged, Age Concern, ‘Anchor Staying Put’ and The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service will each give short talks about the services they provide. Each organisation will have a stand, where people can obtain further information and speak to individual members of staff.

The event is free and Marks and Spencers are laying on refreshments. To attend, contact Ruth on 01635 264 624.
