Cones of contention

For the last 18 months thousands of orange cones have made their home at Chieveley, but at last they’re off. The A34 underpass will be completed on Sunday, and all remaining construction paraphernalia removed. The switch means the 40mph limit will be raised to 70mph for underpass motorists.

Gym will fix it

One of West Berkshire’s smallest schools is to get a new sports hall. Enborne Primary School’s 50 pupils have most of their lessons, including PE, and then lunch, in one classroom. But staff are planning to add a second classroom and a new sports hall to give everyone a bit more legroom.

Clere contest

The Clere School elected its first group of school councillors on Monday, after 137 pupils put themselves up for election. The pilot scheme was run by Basingstoke and Deane Council to teach teenagers how democracy works.

There’s just a month to register objections to new housing plans affecting Ashford Hill and Burghclere. Basingstoke and Deane is whittling down a long list of sites to build housing on, and an inquiry is scheduled to start Nov 30. Objections should be noted by October 22.

Grab a grant

More than 100 local clubs and societies will be clamouring for the next tranche of handouts from Greenham Common Trust. The landlord of New Greenham Park has £150,000 in the kitty to support local good causes, and the deadline for applications is December 10. The organisation has handed out more than £1 million in the last six years.
