Newbury in brief
15th September 2004 17.06pm

Water hike

Higher water prices are on the way thanks to water regulator Ofwat. Thames Water wanted permission to hike prices by 13 per cent in Newbury, to help pay for London’s crumbling sewer network.

But Ofwat said that because Thames Water’s spent more on pipe repairs than other water companies, it could add another four per cent to bills. Bills are expected to rise next year from £211 per home to £248 a year. Ofwat will make a final decision at the end of the year.

Golf plans teed up

Detailed plans to build a pavilion at Donnington Grove Golf Club to host 35,000 golf fans next year have been unveiled. As revealed on this site, the former Parasampia course is hosting the English Open Championships next October. The clubhouse is being moved to old farmbuildings, and a new car park and entrance is planned.

Crash stats rise again

The number of crashes attended by Newbury firecrews has risen again. Car crashes attended in August were two thirds higher than this time last year, holding true to a summer long trend. However, the number of fires attended is down on the hot dry summer of 2003.

Estate name row

A new cul-de-sac off Andover Road is to be named Beech Place, despite murmurings from town councillors, who wanted Pearce Place, Jennet Place or Hunt Place.

Town bar gets music licence

One of Newbury’s brightest new restaurant-bars has been cleared to play live music. Sustenance in the Market Place has been handed a Public Entertainment Licence.
