Phone mast battle resurfaces
13th September 2004 12.32pm

Residents in Speen could see a 60ft mobile phone mast just yards from their gardens following the breakdown of talks aimed at siting the mast in a different location.

Talks between Sutton Estates and Hutchison 3G, to site the mast on land next to the bypass, have collapsed after four months, and the telecoms giant is now re-considering putting the aerial and dishes on the corner of Battle Close.

West Berkshire planners refused consent for this site in April, after coming under pressure from local residents, and amid concerns over how mast applications were dealt with in the council’s Market Street offices.

Planners and councillors have no powers to stop a mast going up in Battle Close, as Hutchison 3G is insistent that it gets coverage in the Speen area.
