New DIY chain?

Another delay has occurred in the construction of another wing of Newbury Retail Park. Owner Friends Provident already has clearance to add up to four giant units on land next to Boots, increasing out of town floorspace by a third. But one of the mystery tenants has applied to add even more space, and a mezzanine level. It’s expected that Pinchington Lane will be turned into a dual carriageway when the retail park is finished. DIY chain Wickes, discount clothes shop Matalan, and Currys have all been mooted to take the slots.

Canal upgrade

The increasingly popular Kennet and Avon Canal is getting a £250,000 upgrade. British Waterways is spending the cash on replacing ground paddles on the locks.

Manicurists get thumbs up

Manhattan Nail bar in Bartholomew Street has been cleared to use the upstairs office as a staff flats. Planners gave the thumbs up last week after discovering that the beauticians were sleeping there.
