On their marks for Berkshire's Olympics
09th July 2004 11.13am

More than 200 West Berkshire children will be donning their red Vodafone t-shirts to represent the district at the Thames Valley Youth Games tomorrow.

Three thousand young athletes from the 16 boroughs in the Thames Valley have been training hard to compete in 10 different sports, at venues in Windsor, Eton and Maidenhead.

The games give a chance for children not normally picked for school sports to have a go at an activity, and all have been coached voluntarily for the last three months.

In 2002, West Berkshire collected more medals than any other district, but the organisers prefer to play down the competitive nature of sport, and focus on participation.

Vodafone paid £5,000 to sponsor West Berkshire at the event – enough to get the red shirts printed. The cash came from the Vodafone Foundation, which has an annual budget of £5 million.
