I am not only a new boy to Newbury Community but this is the first submission to any forum so please bear with me. When the father of a friend died she found in the attic of his home a box containing many bits and pieces of old home movies. The name on the boxes of film is H.T.Cadd, Jack Hotel Newbury and also of Bear Hotel Hungerford. These pieces of film shot on a home cine camera show scenes and happenings of and around Newbury circa 1934 to 1937 as well as scenes from other parts of the country. I have had the film digitised and I am endeavouring to collate them into some sort of order that is viewable. Some of the sequences show scenes of the river (? I assume at Newbury,) a regatta on the river near to the G. Applegate Jnr boatyard, Newbury Carnival 1935, an open air Pageant with a cast of many depicting scenes of the Henry 8th Queen Elizabeth 1 era, and persons and efforts of the Newbury Amateur Dramatic Society. Much is partial, disjointed, and of varied quality, hence the need to fit together what one can to make something that is viewable. We will try our best and when it is completed I would be pleased to copy it off for anyone who may be interested. Yesterday (Sat 14th) I searched for information regarding the Bear Hotel, Hungerford and Jack Hotel, Newbury. I was thrilled to find an article posted on newbury.net/forum giving the history of Jack Hotel. What was more exciting was finding that the proprietors of the time (circa 1932) were Mr & Mrs. H. A. Cadd. We have some film of what may be a father and son couple and I wonder if H.A Cadd was father and H.T. the son. Also there is a mature lady who features a great deal in the antics of The Newbury Amateur Dramatic Society. I wonder if she might be Mum, Mrs H. A. Cadd. I e-mailed “administrator” of newbury.net/forum explaining what we had and Brian replied that a great many members are very knowledgeable regarding the history of Newbury and not only might be able to shed light on the Cadd family but may also be interested in the film itself. Both Marilyn (the lady who found the films in her father’s attic) and I come from Yeovil and do not know Newbury at all. So, anything that would help to uncover the mystery of why these reels of film belonging to a person from Newbury came to be in an attic in Yeovil would be very much appreciated.. Dave Smith

I'm sorry I know nothing of the people you speak of, but it sounds fascinating, nevertheless. |

I am sure that your cine will be highly prized. There must be huge amounts of old stuff stored in lofts. 1935 is pretty old. We had cine from 1950 of Iraq, and Papua which had been unused for 40 years. Us boys who inherited couldn't find bulbs for the projector. At last elder bro found a friend who turned the cine into VHS. What's that now ? When computers were invented I turned the VHS into digital.
It is a great fun to edit and try and make a story line. I used Pinnacle Studio which came bundled with a DVD recorder. Rendering is a bore. You just have to go shopping for a couple of hours. Post them on youtube. 10 minutes is the limit. Thanks for sharing " History in the attic" hex |

Refer to this site for the history of the Bear Hotel at Hungerford: http://www.hungerfordvirtualmu.....charnham_street.htmlHorace Archer Cadd appears in the listing from 1934 till 1938. From 1938 till 1939 the listing gives details of Maud Mary Cadd (Widow of H A Cadd). In 1940 Mrs M M Cadd is listed for Roberta Ladies Hairdresser |

OOOps. Times have changed. I now get nice posts from youtube asking if I want to host adverts. It seems I could make a very very small fortune. It used to be 100mbg or 10 minutes, this is years ago. No such thing as a free lunch. I still hope that the attic discoveries are posted. hex |

Roberta Ladies Hairdressers is currently owned by Hilda Fisher. She's owned it for approx. 50 years. So I'd guess she bought it from Ms Cadd.

Gentlemen, all this is terrific stuff. The problem is, as I said, I am new to forum and never having done this before I do not know how I respond to you all individually. I can only assume I make a general reply to you all. Administrator and Threepwood all that info is terrific stuff and I shall follow up soonest. I can only assume that H.T. was the son of Mr Horace Arthur and Mrs Maud Mary Cadd? There were a couple of references to a Tony and also a G.Cadd in the 1939 period. With luck if there are any surviving relatives we may yet have a chance to pass on what we have to them. Please keep the info coming. Hexem, I don't think that I will be uploading to U Tube because it looks as though we will have a DVD of 50 minutes or thereabouts. I have no objection to passing on a copy of the DVD to anyone who may be interested. It is strange that you should mention Pinnacle, Hexem. I started with Pinnacle but proved to be so unstable for me that I moved on the Sony Vegas. The trouble is I find Vegas so complicated it takes me forever to get any project done. With luck we will get this one done sometime soon - hopefully.

An interesting topic from such long ago times. Dave. Yes Pinnacle was stable in 2000, but wobbled after. I really enjoyed putting things in order 'storylinewise'. If you are interested, my youtubes from 1950s are on cje49. I am the little boy in shorts.I did live in Newbury in my childhood to teens. But Father had the camera!
You can break up the story to post on youtube which might make it easier for viewing , if you wished.
For example there is a short view from 1948 of a sports day at Burghclere cricket ground. On youtube. Best wishes .Hex |

Horace Archer Cadd was the last landlord of the Jack Hotel - taking it on in 1924 until it closed in 1934. He evidently moved on to the Bear at that time.
There was a dining club that met at the Jack - the Jacobites. He had a go at relocating it to the Bear - I don't know if it lasted. |

Thank you for your posts Hexem and Blackdog and to all of you. This is becoming a true to life investigation. Threepwood, I have followed up your lead and have sent an e-mail to the lady you mentioned at the establishment Roberta Hairdressers. I could not believe that even on their web page it says "Opposite The Bear Hotel" I hope that the lady will be kind enough to reply. We are beginning to establish the history of Mr and Mrs H.A. Cadd but the film maker and owner of these films was H. T. Cadd. Was this gentleman the son? Would anyone know if Horace and Maud had a son H.T.? As I mentioned before a Tony (possibly derived from H.T.? and a G. Cadd have also appeared on the addresses on the packages the films were in when sent back from the developers. H.T. or even G. could be the lead to any relatives who may be alive today. It would be any relatives alive today who would get the greatest thrill to see their forebears in this film. As this mystery drama unfolds I hope we evolve more a Poirot than an Inspector Clueso. Dave Smith |

Thanks for the street view suggestion.Threepwood. I always liked Hungerford when Father decided on a jaunt.
Excellent views of Roberta's and The Bear. I hope the thread will spark more information about the attic films. I still think that short bits on youtube would be appreciated by more folk than a DVD. It is your choice of course. It is dead easy these days to post. Keep editing. These films are older than most of us. Hex |
