This is a view into the Market Place from the pavement outside the Post Office. Taken in the late sixties. The entrance to the Kennet Centre is now located where Bargains unlimited used to be. Obviously names that have disappeared include VisionHire and Dexter Robinson. There was a carpet shop and a cafe called the Red Rooster (I think that is correct). I believe the Co-op was demolished and rebuilt as an identical building and became the Kennet Mall. Hickmans the Chemist survived the demolition but closed in the early 2,000's. The building on the right of the picture was Barclays Bank, which was demolished in 1969 and rebuilt as we know it today.

Before Bargains unlimited was Tom Carr the tobacconists, and before that was the launderette and an alleyway through to Bart. St. next to the Catherine Wheel. Past Dexter Robinsons was Rumbelows Television Shop (or it may have still been Bolloms), and then a wine merchants at one point I believe, although I am not sure if it is in this picture. It became a small carpet shop (Cox's). Beyond the Co-op was Hickmans, then Daniels. I also remember opposite Daniels in the Market Place was William & Glynns Bank, which became Martins Bank, which was taken over by Barclays (about where RBS is now), and of course, the Plaza.

The original Co op of course was exactly where that phone box is, joined to the post office by the old Kimber's almshouses.

Would this become 'Kimber's Corner' when using a bus?

Nope, Kimber's Corner was on the corner of Pound St and Bartholomew street. It's now an estate agent but was a grocers owned by ex mayor of Newbury Miss Elsie Kimber.
