Thames Valley Police is appealing for information after an attempted robbery in Newbury.
The incident happened at about 10.40pm on Tuesday 10th November, in the alleyway between Courtlands Road and Greenham Road.
An 18-year-old man was walking home along the alleyway when he was approached by two youths walking in the opposite direction.
They stopped the man and an altercation ensued, in which the victim was struck around the head and body several times with a chain.
The youths were both white and around 16 or 17-years-of-age. The first youth was 5ft 10ins, with short brown hair. He was wearing a bulky material jacket with four large pockets, dark jeans and skater-style trainers.
The second youth was 5ft 8ins and stockier than the first youth. He had a shaved head with short blond hair. The victim believes he had a local accent.
PC Brian Lock, investigating the incident, said: “Although nothing was taken, the victim has suffered a nasty attack and sustained injuries to his face and body. The chain used in the assault was slightly larger than that you would expect to find on a bicycle.
“I am keen to hear from anyone who may have been in the area at the time would may have seen these two youths, anyone who may have seen where they came from or even where they went.
“This type of behaviour will not be tolerated in Newbury and I would like to reassure the community that we are doing everything within our power to ensure the offenders are brought before the courts as soon as possible.”
