This is the wharf/basin taken from a map of Newbury dated 1768 by a chap called John Willis and shows the inlet from the river (The canal wasn’t there yet.) Victoria park is just marshland.(The Marsh). There is a small brook running down Northbrook Street

The Kennet & Avon canal was still in the future when Willis drew up this map but the Kennet Navigation had been open for almost 40 years - connecting Newbury to the Thames at Reading.
The map shows how the wharf basin connected to the canal - totally differently from the recent proposal for the Wharf redevelopment.  The old basin entered at an oblque angle to the flow of the river/canal (very fast flowing in canal terms).  The recent scheme expected narrow boats to enter and exit the basin at 90 deg to the current - a nightmare  for the average holiday boater.
